Romagnoli Set For Painful Lazio Goodbye

The bond between Alessio Romagnoli and Lazio appears to be approaching its natural conclusion. According to Il Corriere dello Sport, the club is determined to continue its defensive overhaul and youth movement, making it clear that no player is considered untouchable. Among those at risk of departure this summer is Romagnoli, who will turn 30 in January.

Despite being under contract until 2027, Romagnoli could be set for an early exit after three seasons with the Biancoceleste. The situation is described as a "painful separation" — one Romagnoli had begun to anticipate over the past year as signs of instability grew. While he had opportunities abroad, including an offer from Saudi Arabia in February and interest from the Premier League, Lazio chose to delay any transfer talks until the end of the season.

Interestingly, Romagnoli was reportedly considered a sellable asset even a year ago. In 2022, he sacrificed a €6 million salary elsewhere to join Lazio for half that amount, driven by the dream of wearing the club’s iconic eagle crest. He was promised a salary increase upon Champions League qualification, but that promise was never fulfilled even after securing the achievement in 2023 — creating the first major fracture in the relationship.

Director of Sport Angelo Fabiani attempted to heal the divide, but efforts were ultimately unsuccessful. Throughout it all, Romagnoli remained committed to Lazio and never sought a departure. Now, however, parting ways seems increasingly possible.

Should Romagnoli leave, it would not be an easy decision for either side. From a sporting perspective, Lazio would need to find a defender of similar quality, and emotionally, it would be a heavy loss. Romagnoli, a Roman native and lifelong Lazio supporter, embodies a rare loyalty in modern football — a reminder of figures like Di Canio, Nesta, and Cataldi, who wore their love for the club proudly.

Ultimately, any decision regarding Romagnoli’s future will be made with deep consideration. Until then, his focus remains on helping Lazio secure another Champions League berth for their fans — a final gift before a potential goodbye.
