Lazio Pay Tribute To Late Pope Francis At St. Peter’s Basilica

April 25, 2025

Yesterday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., a delegation from S.S. Lazio, led by club president Claudio Lotito, gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica to honor the memory of Pope Francis, who passed away last Monday. The group included members of the men's and women's first teams, coaching staff, and club executives.

Over the years, the bond between the Vatican and Lazio has grown strong, rooted in shared charitable efforts and a mutual appreciation for the game of football. Pope Francis, a known supporter of the sport, maintained a warm relationship with the Roman club, often highlighting the power of athletics to unite people across divides.

In a moment of solemn remembrance, the club paid homage to the Pope’s enduring legacy. President Lotito expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, “The entire Biancoceleste family mourns deeply. Pope Francis’ message of inclusion, compassion, and love for the vulnerable will remain central to our values.”

Lazio’s sports director, Angelo Fabiani, highlighted the Pope’s impact on youth and sport, noting his influence will continue to resonate within the club. Head coach Marco Baroni called the Pope a symbol of unity and selflessness, whose guidance transcends religious and cultural boundaries.

Speaking on behalf of the players, men's team captain Mattia Zaccagni reflected on the Pope’s unwavering message of peace and solidarity, pledging to carry it forward on and off the field. Gianluca Grassadonia, head coach of the women's team, echoed the sentiment, calling the late pontiff a “guiding light” in life and faith.

Midfielder Flaminia Simonetti added that Pope Francis' championing of sport as a vehicle for togetherness and understanding will continue to inspire the women’s team.

As the world mourns a spiritual leader, S.S. Lazio joins the chorus of voices remembering Pope Francis not just for his role in the Church, but for his enduring belief in the power of sport to unite humanity.
