Lazio Aim To Reignite European Championship Race In Crucial Clash Against In-Form Genoa

April 21, 2025

Following a gut-wrenching Europa League exit, Lazio shift their focus back to Serie A as they prepare to face a revitalized Genoa side on Monday evening (21/04). Marco Baroni’s men are aiming to reignite their push for a Champions League spot after a disappointing run of results domestically and in Europe.

The Biancoceleste bowed out of the Europa League quarter-finals on penalties despite a commendable comeback performance against Bodo/Glimt at the Stadio Olimpico. Having trailed 2-0 from the first leg, they fought back to win 3-1 after extra time, only to falter in the decisive shootout, with Taty Castellanos missing the final spot-kick in a heart-wrenching moment for the home fans.

That defeat followed a tense 1-1 draw in the Derby della Capitale against Roma, further denting Lazio’s top-four hopes. With only one win in their last five league outings, the Aquile must now finish the season strong to stay in the race for Champions League qualification.

Their next challenge comes in the form of Genoa, a side that has quietly climbed the table under the guidance of Patrick Vieira. Since the Frenchman took charge in November, the Grifone have amassed 29 points from 20 matches, lifting them to ninth place and far from relegation danger.

Genoa’s home form has been a cornerstone of their recent success. Unbeaten at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in 2025, they’ve recorded five wins in their last six home games and boast the best defensive home record this year, conceding only twice. Such resilience has turned them into a tough opponent for any visiting side.

Historically, Lazio have enjoyed playing against Genoa, averaging 2.3 goals per game against them since 2015/16 — their best scoring rate against any team in that span. However, current form suggests this visit could be far more challenging.

With only six matches remaining in the league, Baroni’s side face a make-or-break stretch. A victory in Genoa could be the spark they need to stay in contention for Europe’s elite competition.
