Zaccagni And Rovella Called Up To Italy Squad For UEFA Nations League Clash Against Germany
Lazio will have two representatives in the Italy squad for the highly anticipated UEFA Nations League quarter-finals against Germany. Captain Mattia Zaccagni and midfielder Nicolo Rovella have both been called up by coach Luciano Spalletti as the Azzurri aim for a place in the semifinals.
Italy, having finished second in their group, will play the first leg at San Siro on Thursday (20/03) before traveling to Dortmund for the decisive second leg. Spalletti has named a 25-man squad, with Zaccagni and Rovella securing their spots.
For Zaccagni, this selection marks a return to the national team after being left out of the previous international break. The Lazio captain had been overlooked due to concerns about his fit within Spalletti’s 3-4-2-1 formation. However, his impressive performances for the Biancoceleste have earned him another opportunity. He will compete for a place in the attack alongside Moise Kean, Mateo Retegui, and Matteo Politano.
Meanwhile, Rovella’s inclusion comes as no surprise. The 23-year-old has steadily gained Spalletti’s trust and is establishing himself as one of Italy’s most promising midfielders. He will look to solidify his role in the squad, though he faces competition from Torino’s Matteo Ricci in the deep-lying playmaker role.
While Lazio celebrate Zaccagni and Rovella’s call-ups, there was disappointment for Alessio Romagnoli, who was left out of the squad despite his recent goal-scoring contributions. The Lazio defender has been in fine form but did not make Spalletti’s final selection.
