Tavares: "Settling In Here Was Easy Thanks To The High-quality, Supportive Team. Without Their Support, My Performance Wouldn’t Be The Same. I’ll Keep Developing And Improving As I Play More Games."
Alongside Marco Baroni, Nuno Tavares joined the press conference in Formello to discuss their upcoming Europa League clash against Porto. Here’s what he had to say.
Is playing in Europe easier than in Italy? What differences have you noticed in other leagues?
"This won’t be a defensive game. We’re a tight-knit team and we’re confident. I find it’s often more challenging to play against teams that aren’t title contenders, as they tend to sit back more. The top teams, aiming for the top spots, are more open, which creates space. That’s why games like Real Madrid vs. Milan ended as they did. For us, tomorrow’s game isn’t a test; we’ve already been tested against teams like Torino, Milan, and Fiorentina. The key is to stay grounded and humble."
How has the coaching staff’s management helped? Are you aiming for the Portuguese national team?
"Settling in here was easy thanks to the high-quality, supportive team. They believe in me, and I believe in them. Without their support, my performance wouldn’t be the same. As for the national team, I think about it, but it’s not my main focus. I’m playing consistently at a big club, and if the chance comes, great; if not, that’s okay too."
Do you see yourself among Europe’s top full-backs? You’ve mentioned Alaba and Cancelo as inspirations, and Lotito even said he wouldn’t sell you for €70 million. How do you see your level?
"Alaba is a well-rounded player, and Cancelo is a joy to watch. I think I’m more similar to Alaba, with strengths in both defending and attacking. I’ve heard the president’s remarks, and it’s flattering. I was already approached this summer, and I always believe I can achieve more and push my limits."
You’ve played against Porto before. Have you shared your insights with the team?
"No one asked me, but everyone knows Porto is a fierce team with a lot of heart."
Are Lazio and Porto more suited for the Champions League than the Europa League?
"Both are world-class teams with Champions League potential, and they’re working hard to qualify."
Have you discussed team goals in the locker room? Any specific targets?
"We don’t focus on it too much; the goal is just to go as far as possible. We’re confident, play well, and have a fantastic coach. I always aim for first place because we’re a big club."
How does Serie A compare to other leagues, and how are you adapting?
"The red card at Como was part of my learning process. Football is similar across countries, but I know it takes time to adapt fully. I’ll keep developing and improving as I play more games."
