Lotito Backs Del Piero As Potential Candidate For FIGC Presidency

The Italian Football Association (FIGC) is set to elect a new president on February 3rd, with Alessandro Del Piero reportedly contemplating a run for the position. Current president Gabriele Gravina, who has led the organization since 2018, serving two consecutive terms, is yet to confirm his candidacy but is expected to seek re-election. Candidates must formalize their bids by December 25th, according to La Repubblica.

Del Piero’s potential candidacy was proposed by Lazio president Claudio Lotito, who has a strained relationship with Gravina and seeks new leadership for the FIGC. Lotito’s suggestion of Del Piero underscores a desire for change within Italian football’s governing body. The former Juventus legend is seen as a unifying figure with the popularity and charisma to bridge divisions in the sport.

As Tuttosport reports, Lotito’s endorsement reflects his ambitions to shift the balance of power within the FIGC. If Del Piero chooses to run, he would require formal backing from one of the voting groups, such as the players’ or referees’ associations, or one of the three leagues. Gravina, however, retains significant support from key groups, including Serie C, amateur leagues, Serie A factions, players, and coaches.

Del Piero’s decision could hinge on whether he gains widespread support to introduce meaningful changes to Italian football. Running against Gravina would be a challenging endeavor, but his entry into the race would signal a bold move for transformation in the FIGC.
