Zaccagni Opts Out Of Italy Call-Up To Focus On Recovery

Italy's national team coach, Luciano Spalletti, has clarified that Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni was not included in the October international squad because the player himself requested it. This also gives insight into Zaccagni’s current physical condition.

Earlier reports suggested that Spalletti left Zaccagni out for tactical reasons, due to the team's use of a 3-4-2-1 formation, which limits opportunities for wingers. However, Spalletti revealed that Zaccagni, 29, had asked to be excused due to physical issues that needed attention.

As reported by Il Messaggero, Zaccagni informed Spalletti of his back injury when the coach contacted him prior to Lazio's match against Empoli last weekend. Despite his injury, Zaccagni played a key role in Lazio’s 2-1 win, scoring the equalizer.

The former Hellas Verona player decided to remain at Lazio’s training ground in Formello during the international break to recover fully ahead of their October 19th clash with Juventus, rather than risk worsening his condition while on national duty.

Zaccagni became Lazio’s captain after Ciro Immobile’s move to Besiktas last summer, taking on additional leadership responsibilities. So far this season, he has scored three goals and made two assists across nine matches in Serie A and the Europa League.
