Goalkeeper Dilemma: Provedel's Confidence Boost Creates Uncertainty For Mandas' Future

Any decision in this ongoing goalkeeper dilemma was bound to disappoint one of the two key players involved. So far, Ivan Provedel has kept his spot in goal for Europa League matches, signaling clear support from coach Marco Baroni. This is no accident. Baroni is sending a strong message of confidence in Provedel, showing both the team and management that he maintains control over key decisions, despite any future club considerations. As Baroni put it, "The club wants to develop Mandas, but you know my stance on this role. There’s a hierarchy."

Behind the scenes, a discussion took place with sporting director Angelo Fabiani before the decision was made to start Provedel against Dynamo Kyiv. Baroni wanted to explain why he chose Ivan, who had struggled emotionally during the transfer window and carried some of that tension into the early games of the season. Provedel was eager to play, and Baroni wanted to boost his confidence while also preserving his credibility in the locker room. The club ultimately agreed with Baroni's decision for this match. But what about the next?

The situation with Christos Mandas remains unresolved. Lazio had promised him playing time in the cup competitions to foster his development, which was a key reason the 23-year-old agreed to stay rather than seek opportunities elsewhere. In the summer, Lazio rejected a €2 million loan offer from Manchester City, which included an additional €10 million for a future transfer. However, Mandas' growth could be stunted if he remains on the bench. He also wants to maintain his place in the Greek national team, making it crucial for him to get playing time soon.

Mandas didn't take Baroni's decision well, as indicated by his social media post with a cryptic caption and tense body language in training. Lazio may have miscalculated how to handle this goalkeeper competition. They initially considered selling the 30-year-old Provedel to focus on Mandas for the future. But once it became clear Provedel would stay, they should have sent Mandas out on loan. Unless the rotation starts with the next match against Nice, this issue will continue to linger.
