[Serie A] Lazio - Sassuolo = 1 - 1
Mattia Viti's goal nullified Mattia Zaccagni's free kick, but Lazio secured the points necessary to qualify for the Europa League in a 1-1 draw against Sassuolo in Serie A on Sunday evening (26/05).
Lazio managed only a 1-1 draw with Sassuolo at the Stadio Olimpico in the final match of the 2023/24 Serie A season on Sunday evening. The result had no impact on either team's standings, as Lazio was assured of finishing in seventh place, while Sassuolo had already been relegated.
It was still an emotional evening, with former coach Sven Goran Eriksson receiving a warm welcome from the packed stadium. Eriksson recently announced he is battling terminal cancer.
Lazio was missing Nicolo Casale due to suspension and Patric due to injury, while Sassuolo couldn't field Matheus Henrique due to suspension, and Domenico Berardi and Samu Castillejo were out with injuries.
Alessio Cragno made a save to stop Elseid Hysaj from connecting with Maruo Gila's through ball, and the Sassuolo goalkeeper also blocked Daichi Kamada from receiving Luca Pellegrini's cross.
Lazio broke the deadlock with Mattia Zaccagni's free kick, which split the visitors' defense and bounced into the bottom corner past Cragno.
The lead was short-lived, as Kristian Thorstvedt's free-kick was parried by Alessio Romagnoli, but the rebound fell to Mattia Viti, who equalized.
Both teams created more chances, but neither could score again before the final whistle, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.
