Sarri: "Like Me, The President Is Disappointed That We Were Embarrassed In Front Of The Audience. He Thought We Could Lose To Inter, But Not In That Manner."
Following a 3-0 loss to Inter on Friday night, Lazio's journey in the semifinals of the Italian Super Cup came to an end. Maurizio Sarri acknowledged that his team had a mere 30 percent chance of victory, a sentiment reflected in the lack of confidence displayed by his squad, despite their five triumphs across various competitions.
"It was obvious in the first four or five minutes that there was a significant difference between us and them, but the margin was not as large as it appeared tonight. We should not underestimate how much we assisted them," the coach told Mediaset.
"This is a team that always goes downhill following a run of good performances. It concerns me when I lose like this."
"You can lose to Inter, who have shown that they are a very good team with arguably one of the best midfielders in Europe, but we must take a lot of the blame for this performance."
In the opening moments of the match, Marcus Thuram found the back of the net, swiftly followed by Hakan Calhanoglou's successful penalty kick and Davide Frattesi's impressive counterattack in the last minute. Remarkably, Lazio failed to register a single shot on goal, with Ivan Provedel making several saves to deny Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez.
Following the match, President Claudio Lotito held a conversation with both the coach and the team members in the dressing room.
"Like me, the president is disappointed that we were embarrassed in front of the audience; he is not angry. Like me, he thought we could lose to Inter, but not in that manner."
