Provedel Make A Historic Milestone In His Champions League Debut

In his debut game in the UCL, Ivan Provedel, Lazio's primary goalkeeper, achieved a historic feat by scoring the equalizing goal against Atletico Madrid in the last minute of the match. The game was played on Tuesday, September 19th, at Olimpico Stadium in the evening, local time.

When Ivan Provedel scored a goal in the dying moments of a game against Atletico Madrid, he gained a unique distinction. He became only the second goalkeeper in the history of the Champions League to score a goal that was not from a penalty kick.

In the closing moments of the game at the Olimpico, Lazio was behind 1-0 when their goalkeeper advanced to the forward to help with the corner kick.

The moment that set the match apart was when Luis Alberto sent in a cross, and the goalkeeper made a decisive move. He sliced through a wall of defenders to head the ball home, ultimately triumphing over his fellow goalkeeper, Jan Oblak.

According to Football-Italia's report, The Aquile's goalkeeper is among a select few. Only Vincent Enyeama in September 2010 and Sinan Bolat in December 2009 have also achieved the rare feat of scoring goals as goalkeepers in Champions League matches.

Marco Amelia was another Italian goalkeeper who has scored in another UEFA competition, scoring in a 1-1 tie between Partizan Belgrade and Livorno in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup season.

However, this is nothing new for Provedel, as he also scored in a Serie B encounter in February 2020, securing a 2-2 tie between Ascoli and Juve Stabia.
